Go Circular is excited to launch ‘Winding Down Wineries Waste,’ a pioneering project to reduce food and organic waste in the Hunter Valley wine region. Funded by the NSW Environment Protection Authority, this project aims to create a replicable model for waste reduction that can be applied across wine regions throughout Australia. 

Partnering with key industry associations, local councils, and sustainability leaders, including the Hunter Valley Wine & Tourism Association, Cessnock Council, Hunter Culinary Association, Loop Organics and winery with restaurants, we will co-design innovative solutions that equip stakeholders with the skills to drive long-lasting change. 

A key element of this program is identifying and leveraging the innovative and practical strategies already being implemented by hospitality businesses and winery with restaurants in the Hunter Valley to reduce food waste. By showcasing and celebrating the solutions already in use, we aim to highlight the creativity of local businesses while fostering greater collaboration and knowledge-sharing across the region. Through these partnerships, we can expand the reach of successful practices, empowering other businesses to adopt similar methods, reduce waste, and strengthen the Hunter Valley’s position as a leader in sustainable hospitality. Ultimately, this initiative aims to support a local network where businesses support one another to achieve shared sustainability goals. 

Through this initiative, we’re fostering a local community of practice and collaboration and developing a detailed Wine Region food waste management plan. The plan will feature local best practice case studies and will serve as a blueprint for other wine regions across Australia. 

“Winding Down Wineries Waste” is more than just a project—it’s a commitment to empowering local businesses to think creatively and collaborate on regenerative solutions, operational efficiency, and place-based collaboration. By catalysing the creation of a circular economy for food waste in the Hunter Valley, we’re supporting the wineries businesses and NSW Government’s ambitious goals to reduce food waste and minimise landfill contributions. Together, we’re paving the way for a more sustainable future in the wine industry, with benefits that extend far beyond the vineyard.
